Observation of World Tuberculosis Dayon 24TH March 2019
World Tuberculosis Day, observed on 24 March each year, is designed to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease. Despite significant progress over the last decades, TB continues to be the top infectious killer worldwide, claiming over 4 500 lives a day. In India, each year, approx. 220,000 deaths are reported due to Tuberculosis. Also in India, TB is responsible for the death of every third AIDS patient.
Initiative from SNP+
On the occasion of World TB Day the team of SNP participated on an event organized by Revised National TubercolsisPrograme(RNTCP),Kolkata,Diamond Harbour in collaboration with SNP+ . The event focused on the World TB Day theme (i.eIt’s time to reminded of the commitments made and the timely need for action in scale up, research, funding, human rights and accountability) and how to unite efforts to end TB by 2025. Around 1400 people joined in this event including city Deputy Mayor, Representative from Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Ward Counselor, City TB Officer, NGO staffs and TB survivors and the PLHIV.
Activities of the Event
With the welcome speech of honorable guests the event was inaugurated. It was followed by 1.2 mile walk. Around 1200 people walk in the Rally with banners and hoarding of TB messages.Free T-Shirts, Cap, Hanky and badges with TB logo was provided to all the participants. Along with an advocacy meeting was done with City Mayor, Ward Counselors, City TB officer . The agenda of advocacy was to ask for nutrition support, CB-NAAT Testing and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for the people of PLHIV. Positive response was getting fromCity TB officer as they were show their interest to come to visit the organization and will help to build network for social benefit schemes. The flag off session followed by lunch to all participants was ended the event.
